Hi, my name is Tanner and I am a saxophone player from Collinsville, IL. I have been a student of music for 16 years. My musical influences include Maceo Parker, James Carter, Eddie “Lockjaw” Davis and Sonny Rollins. I also enjoy Monty Alexander, Oscar Peterson, James Brown, Parliament Funkadelic, and Earth, Wind & Fire. My teaching style can best be described as meet-you-where-you’re-at. My teaching philosophy can best be described by saying that I love to find out what you want to get out of lessons, and then let’s figure out the quickest way to get to your goals while also laying a foundation for good saxophone playing. In my lessons, you can expect to learn how to practice long tones, overtones, scales, and depending on your goals, how to transcribe and how to improvise. I like to tell my students “Ain’t nothin to do but do it!” The point of me teaching you is to teach you how to be your own coach. I’ll give you the best tools to get you where you want to be exercises and practice philosophies, and then you are going to become your own coach and your own teacher through these tools! My favorite thing about teaching is talking about music. I can’t get enough of it! Also anytime there’s an epiphany moment, those just brighten my day so much! They are my favorite! My approach as a teacher is this: wherever you are, let’s get you to the next step on the staircase. I will never shame anyone for not already being at the top of the stairs, that is the worst attribute any teacher can have. My teaching style is the exact opposite of that.
